Brazil’s Azul Airlines’ stock rallies after encouraging Q4 results, but analysts express caution: here’s why

Azul Airlines (AZUL4) had a surge in share price after releasing its 4Q24 report on January 24. At 11:15 am (Brasília), the company’s shares increased 5.23% to R$3.82 per.

According to local media InfoMoney, experts in the financial sector, including XP Investimentos, Goldman Sachs, and JPMorgan, believe the airline’s strong operating performance is driving the rebound.

Positive financial indicators

As per the report, XP Investimentos described Azul’s operational result as excellent and pointed to an adjusted EBITDA, in reais, of R$1.951 billion.

This is a 33% year-on-year growth and aligns with XP & Azul’s 2024 estimates.

Despite a 6% decrease in CASK (cost per available seat kilometre), RASK (revenue per available seat kilometre) remained relatively stable year on year.

While foreign exchange rates increased 18% year-on-year, the report noted that this was almost offset by an extraordinary 17% reduction in fuel prices.

In addition, the resilience of Azul demonstrated through its transition to next-generation aircraft and a continuous focus on cost containment helped drive these results.

Analysts remain cautious

Despite strong quarterly earnings, significant investment companies maintained a neutral view on Azul shares. Goldman Sachs prefers Copa Airlines and LATAM.

Azul’s results were in line, but the firm feels the stock’s potential upside may be limited due to the adverse macroeconomic backdrop.

On the other hand, JPMorgan noted that the company’s load factor emerged at 84%, or 4.4 points higher year-on-year.

In contrast, they warned that while Azul performed strongly operationally, its ability to grow going forward may be compromised.

According to the investment bank, the carrier produced R$128 million of free cash flow, which was largely offset in the quarter and anchored by R$275 million of new net debt.

JPMorgan rated the results overall as neutral to “mildly” negative.

The road ahead for the airline

Staying afloat in the complicated world of aviation will be essential for Azul going forward.

Analysts contended that despite the strong reflections of operational efficiency and financial stability presented by the quarterly results, the challenges from the macroeconomic environment and growing competition in the airline industry should not be ignored as well.

Azul emphasises sustainability and operational efficiency, but investors should stay on alert for how the company manages its finances and market.

Future aircraft capacity will probably be determined more by ongoing reductions in costs than by improved service offerings and fleet efficiency, at least in the near/mid-term.

Ultimately, while Azul performed admirably in the most recent quarter, the ramifications of macroeconomic conditions and liability management actions indicate that investors should proceed with caution.

The quickly changing aviation landscape will continue to have an impact on Azul’s stock performance, and stakeholders will closely monitor how the firm responds to these ongoing difficulties.
